  • ½ kg chicken
  • 3 tbspn curd or yogurt
  • 1 ¼ table spoon of ginger garlic paste
  • Salt as needed
  • ¼ tbspn of turmeric
  • ½ tspn of red chilli
  • 1 tbspn lemon juice
  • ½ tbpn of biryani masala powder


  • 4 green cardamoms
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 to 6 cloves
  • Cinnamon
  • ¾ table spoon shahijeera
  • 1 strand mace or javitri


  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 2 tbspn ghee or oil
  • 1 large sliced onion
  • ½ cup chopped mint
  • 1 chopped green chilli
  • ¼ cup curd or 4 tbspn of yogurt
  • 2 tbspn fried onions
  • 1 table spoon biryani masala
  • ¼ to ½ tbspn of red chilli
  • Salt as per the requirements to add in the chicken
  • 3 cups water or coconut oil
  • 3/4 table spoon of salt to sprinkle in water

Preparation and Cooking total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes

  1. To begin with, First of all, Make gashes on the chicken and marinate with curd, ginger garlic paste, ½ table spoon of salt, biryani masala powder, turmeric and chilli powder. Set it aside for complete 1 hour.
  2. Next, Wah basmati rice thrice and soak for 30 minutes. Drain them for 30 minutes to a colander.
  3. In the next step, Heat ghee or oil in the cooker and add all the dry spices mentioned above in a temper. Saute them for a minute.
  4. After that, Add onion and Fry till the colour turns out to be a light brown.
  5. Now, Add the marinated chicken in it and Saute for 5 minutes on a medium heat. Cover and cook it on a low flame until the chicken is cooked.
  6. Next, Add curd, pudina, green chilli, red chilli powder, ½ table spoon of sale and 1 table spoon biryani masala to it.
  7. Mix everything well and layer chicken evenly at the bottom of the cooker. After that, Spread rice in a layer over the chicken.
  8. Pour 3 cups of water or coconut oil to the bowl and add salt to it as per the requirements.
  9. Pour 2 cups of water around the cooker and 1 cup over the rice. Sprinkle some pudina or fried onions to it.
  10. After performing all of the above steps, Set the flame from medium to high if cooking in the cooker.
  11. Cook for 1 whistle. When the pressure goes down, open the lid.
  12. In the end, Divide the chicken biryani into portions and serve it with raita and sliced veggies or papad.


  • Do not use sour curd. If the curd is slightly sour, then skip using lemon juice while preparing the biryani.
  • Use the water according to the requirements of rice. Some need less water while others need more of that.
